Action is the key to victory and the antidote to despair.

Here are the challenges and the responses that allow us to do what we can with what we have where we are:

Constitutional crisis in our nation’s Capitol. Donald Trump, Elon Musk, their enablers and the quislings who accommodate and aid their assault on the Constitution and the rule of law must be stopped. Last week we learned that, in addition to illegally impounding Congressionally appropriated funds and dismantling Congressionally chartered agencies, they are illegally forcing federal prosecutors to suspend corruption charges against those who have betrayed the public trust (e.g. NYC Mayor Eric Adams) in quid-pro-quo deals.

Then, this weekend, Donald Trump tweeted “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law”. He now not only claims that he is above the law, but also clearly encourages his supporters to break the law, potentially violently, with complete impunity. Remember, this is the man who encouraged violence against immigrants in his first term that led to the murder of 23 people in El Paso in 2019.

I’m asking you to call your representative; I’m asking you to call your Senator. And I’m asking you to tell them to fight every single thing that Donald Trump wants to do. It doesn’t matter how big it is, it doesn’t matter how small. There is a time for compromise and consensus. THIS IS NOT THAT TIME. This is an administration that is openly promising to end American democracy and the rule of law. You have all of the proof you need. It is not theoretical, it is not possible, it is happening right now.

School voucher fight in Texas. After the Texas Senate passed a $1 billion school voucher bill earlier this month, all eyes are on the Texas House which will either ratify the Senate’s action, modify it or defeat the proposal entirely. The Texas voucher plan will drain hundreds of millions of public tax dollars from public schools while giving families whose children already go to private school public money to do so.

This will utterly screw rural Texans (where there are no private schools to send your kid to), it will screw resource-starved urban districts (who are already struggling to make ends meet on the meager allotment they currently receive) and it will screw every Texas homeowner and renter as districts across the state are forced to raise property taxes to cover the expected shortfall.

This whole scheme is being funded by rightwing Christian nationalists who have given Governor Abbott tens of millions of dollars to elect pro-voucher stooges to the legislature.

Two things you can do:

  1. Find out what it will do to your local school district and then share the news with friends and family (directly, through email or on social media): https://dontdefundmyschool.com/

  2. Call your State Representative and tell them to vote NO on vouchers: 512-463-4630

Reach, register and mobilize voters in Texas. Sign up to become a Powered By People volunteer if you haven’t already. We believe in person-to-person organizing — meaning, human physical presence where young and low-propensity voters are. Nothing against digital organizing, phone banking and social media. But that’s not how we’re going to get our country back. People connecting with people to overcome injustice and authoritarianism and win critical elections. It is not too soon to begin the work for the 2026, 2028 or 2030 elections. In fact, it is absolutely necessary that we start now.

Above all else, we must keep the faith and keep up the fight. That means keeping despair at bay, actively pursuing hope and backing that up with the action that will allow us to fulfill its promise.
