It is not enough to tell each other what we’re against. In order to win political power, in order to have a chance for a better world, we must share with our friends and family and fellow Americans what we are for. What it will take to help those who are hurting, to right the wrongs that have been committed. To not only point out who’s screwing you and who is screwing up but how we’re going to fix a system that’s failed all but the most powerful in this country.
Imagine a world where instead of turning our back on our friends and allies, we work with them to build peace across the globe. where we work peacefully to stop nuclear proliferation everywhere — imagine ending the threat of nuclear war from Iran, from Russia, from China, from the U.S. from any country that has the power to destroy life on this planet. Imagine a future where we really stand for human rights and self determination. One where we are no longer complicit in bombing children and innocent families by the tens of thousands in Gaza, one where we use the extraordinary power of the U.S. to ensure there is a sovereign independent state for the Palestinian people and safety and security for all of the people of the region, Israelis, Palestinians, everyone.
Imagine we apply that same logic here at home. Imagine a future when we aren’t worried about plainclothes masked agents – without badges or warrants — sweeping Americans off the streets without due process, because we’ve recommitted ourselves to the Constitution, to the idea that no one is above or below the protection of the law. Imagine we’ve finally written our immigration laws to match our values: a safe, legal orderly path for those who want to come here to contribute to our success… fully legalizing the Dreamers, their parents and every other American who makes this country great and will make it even greater when they can contribute as full U.S. Citizens.
Imagine a future where we are no longer fighting Medicaid cuts in the least insured state in the union but instead providing every American a chance to be healthy for the rest of their lives.
Imagine a future where teachers aren’t working two or three jobs just to make ends meet because we now show them the respect they’ve earned and they deserve and we ensure that they and every working American are paid a true living wage. Here’s a crazy idea: how about you just work one job and have time left over to hang out with your kids, go to a movie, enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard to build?
Imagine we stop shoveling trillions of dollars to the wealthiest and instead use those resources to build the millions of homes this country needs so that we can all have a place to call our own; trillions to cure cancer, invest in the solutions to climate change — do big things that makes everybody’s life better!
And now, imagine a Democratic Party no longer governed by big money and corporate politics, a message no longer defined by consultants and pollsters but by people, all people. A party that fights for this future, one that doesn’t submit or roll over. A party that no longer writes off rural voters or takes for granted black and brown Texans — but fights to earn the votes of everyone! If you voted for Trump you are welcome in this coalition. If you didn’t vote at all last time we’re here to listen, to learn and to work with you to get it right.
If we believe in this then we must take action and you must take it now.
Action is the antidote to despair and it is the key to victory.
Organize protests or join the ones already happening. It’s breaking through and shaping public opinion. It gives people hope!
Make a decision that you’re going to run for office or support someone who will. Or volunteer with a group like Powered by People — register Texans to vote and then stay in touch with them to make sure that they do!
A powerful positive vision and the action that can bring it to life. Thats the way forward.
